We were told that the water in the pipeline loses less than two degrees temperature between source in the mountains and its destination. Much of this will go to geothermal heating of homes and businesses. Over half of Iceland's heating comes from geothermal, and all of its electricity comes from renewables (70% hydro, 30% geothermal).þingvellir NP, Iceland, Sep 2010
This valley represents the most exposed rift of two tectonic plates in the world other than the Great Rift in Africa. Here the two mid-Atlantic plates (the North American and the Eurasian) are pulling apart at a rate of 2 to 3 centimeters per year. This rift divides Iceland down the middle, with half of the country in North American and the other half in Europe.
