La Maltaraña, once the hacienda of Manuel Cuesta Gallardo. Built between 1906 and 1909, the house is located along the Lerma River (one of the two rivers that feed Lake Chapala) on the east end of Lake Chapala. Gallardo persuaded President Porfirio Díaz to grant him a license to drain one third of Lake Chapala and sell the land for agriculture. Water was pumped out of the marshy areas and the land was sold.
Lake Chapala
The south side of Lake Chapala, especially the southwest corner, is rich agricultural land. Drained in the early 1900s, this land supports a diversity of farm products, especially berries. Raspberries and blueberries are grown here by not only locals but Driscoll and other international companies.
